Under supervision, facilitates the dissemination, relay, and documentation of all communications and requests for assistance received from physicians, or any health care provider, via the UCAN Communications Center in a safe, expeditious, and customer oriented manner.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Three to five years of professional work experience in customer service, physician referral, or emergency medical dispatch preferred.
  • Previous computer experience (in a networked environment), data entry, clerical skills, and work with Attending level Physicians in an academic medical center environment preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple duties in an often stressful environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, telephone, customer service, and prioritization
  • Certification as an EMT required.

Excellence:

  • Responds to requests for UCAN transport through the coordination of referring and receiving party communication, mission specific arrangements, and transport following of ground ambulance, rotor wing, or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Responds to requests received from Physicians via the UCAN Communications Center, in order to expedite communication with a UCH Physician for patient transfer, referral, or consult.
  • Maintains detailed records of all communication and requests for assistance received via the UCAN Communications Center.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of UCH Administrative Policy and Procedure, as well as department specific procedures related to the UCAN service, and Communications Center.
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of all UCAN Communications Center equipment, as well as its safe use , and notification of appropriate personnel in the event of malfunction.
  • Responsible for all aspects of data entry and documentation for UCAN Communications Center activity. This includes, but is not limited to: transport charge entry, UCAN billing to institutional users, statistical tabulation, follow up letters to requesting Attending Physicians, and UCAN-assisted ICU or floor transfers as per policy.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the UCAN Chief Flight Nurse/Administrative Director and/or the Medical/Program Director.

Physical Environment:

  • A Communications Specialist works mainly from the twenty-four hour a day Communications Center where he/she performs daily duties that routinely require use of office and specialty equipment which is not limited to computers, telephones/mini-headsets, Xerox and fax machines, portable communications systems/radios, and other battery operated and/or electrical devices.
  • Because of the critical nature of this work environment, each Communications Specialist must be able to maintain the mental alertness and stamina needed to perform his/her duties for the duration of the shift.
